On May 14, 15 major creative organizations—including KTRWA, the Korea Writers’ Association, and the Korea Music Copyright Association—held a joint press conference in Seoul to declare unified action against unauthorized use of creative works for artificial intelligence (AI) training.
The coalition criticized AI developers for using artists’ works without consent or disclosure, calling it a violation of constitutionally protected rights. They demanded revisions to Korea’s upcoming AI Basic Act, including mandatory disclosure of training data sources, compliance with copyright law, and a fair compensation system for creators.
Referring to similar moves by the EU and the U.S., the group emphasized that creator protection must be a foundation for responsible AI development. They also condemned domestic AI firms for hiding datasets behind “trade secrets,” making legal action nearly impossible for individual creators.
Citing previous legal milestones such as Korea’s action against Netflix on network usage fees, the coalition argued that Korea could again lead by setting global standards in AI regulation. Moving forward, the organizations will expand joint efforts and policy advocacy to safeguard the creative ecosystem.
